WakaWaka launched with help of MoMo its Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) pilot in Rwanda, called the ‘Virtual Grid’. This offered Base of the Pyramid consumers with a premium solar light and charger for an upfront payment of USD 7,00 and leasing fee of USD 0,75 cents a week. The WakaWaka Virtual Grid aimed to capitalize on the fact that although only 12% of rural households in Rwanda have access to electricity, 80% have access to a mobile phone.

The Virtual Grid was introduced by organizing open market storms across villages in the targeted districts. A network of dealers within three districts has been build, enabling people to locally buy scratchcards to re-activate their device every week. Besides sales through dealers, local cooperatives have also proven to be a sales channel in that enables to reach large quantities of customers. Also, in order to scale up PAYGO activities to other districts, WakaWaka has started partnerships with development organizations.
